An independent and dedicated funding and sponsorship group formed to support music organisations and promoting the performance and appreciation of classical music in the county and beyond.

About Sussex Music Events (SME)

Sussex Music Events is a unique and independent organisation dedicated to sourcing sponsorship, revenue streams and other funding to assist and encourage organisations deliver regular their concert schedules

SME further allows such organisations to extend their ambitions to Charity Gala events, private functions and education projects increasing the reach and inclusivity of its audience while promoting an appreciation and awareness of classical music to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

Formerly known as SSO Events (SSOe), we have evolved into Sussex Music Events to convey our independence and extend our support to a broad spectrum of music groups within Sussex and South-East of England.

We are a non-profit organisation working towards charity status whose surplus funds are invested to enrich musical provision in the county by way of high-calibre events

Mission Statement

We believe orchestral music enriches lives, inspires creativity, and fosters social cohesion. Our mission is to support, encourage and promote the excellence, diversity, and vitality of orchestral music, performed by musicians based within Sussex and make this available to a national audience. We source funding, sponsorship, and support for organisations to create, perform, and share their music with audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

With your generous support SME is able to produce some incredible projects to enrich the lives of people living and working on the South Coast.

A Celebration of Verdi

In aid of Save the Children, the sixth of a series of biennial charity concerts featuring Sussex Symphony Orchestra, emerging soloists and a large combined choir drawn from local schools and choirs conducted by Mark Andrew James.

Actor Jamie Martin plays composer Giuseppe Verdi in a 21st Century interview with Sally Taylor (BBC TV) revealing his life story musically illustrated with popular excerpts from his key operatic, orchestral and choral works.

The concert regularly fills the premier Brighton Dome venue attracting a diverse audience, corporate sponsorship and individual supporters keen to experience the unique show and support the chosen charity.

In keeping with the cause, over 200 tickets will be distributed to local child focused groups including NGOs supporting Children’s Services.

Who we are...

Meet the team behind SME

Mark Andrew James, Artistic Director

Mark established SSO in 1993 and, as conductor, remains the driving force behind both the orchestra and SME.

Chris Schmidt, Events / Marketing

Chris plays trombone and makes sure Mark is well stocked with chocolate biscuits.

Daniel Sanders, Finance

Daniel plays violin and keeps our accounts in order so Chris can buy Mark chocolate biscuits.
